Beautiful Lake Pend Oreille
Northern Idaho is home to one of the most beautiful lakes in the lower 48, Lake Pend Oreille. With 111 miles of shoreline, this is Idaho’s largest lake. For those who love the outdoors, incredible scenery and being off the beaten path Lake Pend Oreille is the vacation destination for you.
This lake is blessed with unbelievable natural beauty year around. In the winter ample snowfall covers the ground with temperatures ranging from Arctic cold to banana express temperatures in the 50’s. In the summer the temperatures are extremely pleasant, moderated by the high northern latitude.
The town of Sandpoint (population approximately 7,000) serves as host for the many travelers that have found their way to Lake Pend Oreille. Each season of the year brings different interest groups to the lake.
Spring and summer brings boaters, parasailers, fishermen and photographers who capture the beauty of the lake and its surroundings. Fishermen test their skills with giant Kamloops, mackinaw trout among a dozen other species of fish in these deep waters.
In the fall, hunters converge for the annual autumn hunting seasons. During the snowy winter months, near by Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort is a destination ski resort for visitors from around the world. For those not into winter travel, summer time views from Schweitzer are as stunning during warm months as cold.
For those interested in wildlife viewing, Lake Pend Oreille cannot be out done. Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge provides a home for thousands of ducks and geese. In addition large animals such as deer, moose, elk and bear are often seen frequenting the refuge. Our national bird, the great Bald Eagle is at home all around the lake and often seen “hunting” over the lake or in the trees rimming the lake.
There is always something going on in Sandpoint. Do not be deceived by the small town environment. Sandpoint is home to an eclectic mix of dining establishments, world class art galleries, quality overnight or extended stay facilities, special events and festivals drawing big name performers.
